Understanding viruses today, shapes the health of tomorrow
An integrated approach to Virology, from molecules to cells
The department of Virology at I2BC is dedicated to studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying viral infections. Our teams are internationally recognized for their research in host-virus interactions and structural virology, which form the cornerstone of our scientific endeavors.
Diverse Viral Systems for Integrated Research
Within the department, the research groups investigate a range of viruses, each offering unique insights:
Major human pathogens (rabies, herpes, pox, rota, and human immunodeficiency viruses) to understand their infection strategies and public health impact.
Experimental models (bacteriophages SPP1 and T5, vesicular stomatitis virus) to dissect the viral life cycle with precision.
By studying both prokaryotic and eukaryotic viruses, we uncover common mechanisms as well as shared antiviral defense systems, strengthening our integrative and comprehensive research in virology.
Our Research Themes
1.Host-Virus Interactions: Our teams explore how viral proteins target cellular factors, focusing on:
Hijacking of host cell functions by viruses.
Viral remodeling of cellular organization.
Cellular responses to infection, including antiviral immunity. Methods: Genetics, biochemistry, omics, and advanced imaging (fluorescence and electron microscopy).
2.Structural Virology: We provide a molecular-level description of viral structures during key stages of infection:
Fusion of viral and cellular membranes.
Assembly of viral particles.
Genome packaging in viral particles and delivery to host cells. Methods:In vitro reconstituted systems, X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and emerging in situ structural biology technologies.
3.Therapeutic and Vaccine Innovation: Our research identifies new therapeutic targets and develops strategies against viral diseases, including:
Viral detection and antigen presentation.
Bioengineering of virus-like particles for vaccinology, vectorization, and nanoreactor applications.
Education in Virology: Training the Next Generation
Members of the department are actively involved in teaching at all levels:
Courses in virology, cell biology, antiviral immunity, infectious diseases, and vaccination (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs).
Continuing education for pharmacists and healthcare professionals.
Internships for high school students, undergraduates, master’s students, pharmacy students, and doctoral candidates.
Our goal is to provide high-quality education and training in virology at the University of Paris-Saclay, shaping the next generation researchers and professionals.
